Technically Specified Rubber

Description

Due to its remarkable strength and fatigue life, Natural Rubber (NR) is a versatile material in many engineering applications. NR has good resistance to creep and stress relaxation. It can withstand temperatures of 100°C and sometimes above, and maintains its flexibility at temperatures below -60°C if compounded for that purpose. The disadvantage of NR is its poor resistance to oil and environmental damage (oxygen and ozone), which can be mitigated by chemical protection (antioxidants and antiozonants).

Technically Specified Rubber Technically Specified Rubber (TSR) (also known as Block Rubber) is produced from latex and field coagulum of NR. TSR is high in green strength, tack, easy to mix and has low viscosity. It has good processing characteristics and physical properties. (TSR) (also known as Block Rubber) is produced from latex and field coagulum of NR. TSR is high in green strength, tack, easy to mix and has low viscosity. It has good processing characteristics and physical properties.

Prior to the 1960s, raw natural rubber was marketed in conventional forms (sheet and crepe) and visually graded based on recommendations provided by International Rubber Quality and Packing Committee. Since the early 1970s, every major NR-producing country is responsible for labelling and establishing its own standards based on ISO 2000 which provides guidance on the specification of TSR. Major TSR schemes include Standard Thai Rubber (STR), Standard Indonesian Rubber (SIR), Standard Malaysian Rubber (SMR) and Standard Vietnamese Rubber (SVR).

TSR is graded according to precise technical parameters such as dirt content, ash content, nitrogen content, volatile matter and properties of the rubber such as its Wallace Plasticity (PO) and its Plasticity Retention Index (PRI). Common TSR grades include:

  • TSR CV: Constant viscosity from latex
  • TSR L: Light colored from latex
  • TSR 5: Equivalent to 1 RSS from sheets
  • TSR 10: Field grade material
  • TSR 20: Base field grade material
